A recent collaboration between AVN member Dr. Ted Allison and Dr. Anand Swaroop at the US National Eye Institute demonstrated an evolutionary relationship between the rod and cone photoreceptors of the eye,

that may underlie the evolution of night vision. A key finding is evidence that this link persists to this day, actively driving cones to become rods in developing mammals. The results were published in Developmental Cell, and in a rare accolade, were also highlighted in Nature.
